Claude Speech to Text: Dictate Your Prompts to Claude

Claude can take dictation and hold a spoken conversation, and its Mac app has a Caps Lock shortcut. LumeVoice adds one voice workflow for Claude and everything around it: hold a key, explain what you need in your own words, and a clean prompt appears in the box.

  • Give Claude more context without more typing
  • Works in Claude on web, desktop and phone
  • Same key in Claude Code, Slack and email

Also onMacWindowsiPhoneAndroid

Claude speech to text is built in. As of October 2026, Claude has a dictation microphone on the web, in the desktop app and in the mobile apps, plus voice mode for a spoken back-and-forth. Those work inside Claude. LumeVoice is for when you want one voice workflow everywhere: hold a key and talk in Claude, Claude Code, Slack, email or any other app, and clean text appears where your cursor is.

Short answer

Does Claude have voice input on desktop?

Yes. As of October 2026, the Claude desktop app and claude.ai have a microphone for dictation, and voice mode works on web, desktop and mobile. On a Mac, quick entry adds a Caps Lock dictation shortcut (macOS 14 or later, off by default). Quick entry isn't available on Windows.

Claude's voice input options, explained#

Anthropic puts the difference simply: "dictation gets your words down; voice mode helps you work out what you think" (Claude Academy). Here's how each works as of October 2026.

Dictation#

  • Web and desktop app: press the microphone in the message box, speak, and send when you're ready.
  • iPhone and Android: tap the microphone on the right of the message box, speak, then tap the arrow to send or the X to cancel.
  • Mac quick entry: turn on the voice shortcut in Settings > General, then press Caps Lock to dictate a message to Claude from whatever app you're in. It needs macOS 14 or later and is off by default, because it takes over the Caps Lock key (Anthropic's guide).

Dictation is included on every plan, Free included. For mobile dictation, Anthropic says the audio is deleted once it's converted to text and isn't used to train its models. The same help page lists 12 dictation languages, with everything except English in beta.

Voice mode#

Voice mode is a spoken conversation: you talk, Claude answers out loud, and the transcript is saved in your chat. Start it with the sound wave icon, at the bottom right of the chat on web and desktop or next to the microphone on mobile. It's in beta on all plans, listens hands-free by default with a push-to-talk option for noisy rooms, and counts toward your plan's usage limits (Use voice mode).

Claude Code#

In Claude Code, run /voice and hold Space to dictate a prompt in the terminal. It needs a Claude.ai sign-in and a microphone on your own machine. Our page on dictating in Claude Code covers how LumeVoice fits alongside it.

Why voice prompts work so well with Claude#

Anthropic's prompting guide suggests treating Claude like a brilliant new employee who doesn't know your context, and explaining not just what you want but why. Its test is a good one: if a colleague with no background would be confused by your prompt, Claude will be too.

That's hard to do by typing, because every sentence of background costs effort, so typed prompts get trimmed. It's natural when you talk. You'd brief a new colleague out loud in a minute, with the history, the audience and the reason, and that briefing is exactly the prompt Claude needs.

How to dictate to Claude with LumeVoice#

LumeVoice types into whatever text field has your cursor: claude.ai in any browser, the Claude desktop app on Mac or Windows, and Claude Code in your terminal.

  1. Click into Claude's message box.
  2. Hold fn (Globe) on a Mac, or Ctrl + Win on Windows, and explain what you need.
  3. Let go. Your prompt appears with filler words removed, self-corrections applied and spoken lists formatted.
  4. Read it, attach any files, and send. LumeVoice never presses Enter, and it doesn't read Claude's reply aloud.

For a long brief, double-press the key for hands-free mode and press once to finish. On your phone, use the Lume keyboard in the Claude app on iPhone, or the floating bubble over your keyboard on Android.

Brief Claude the way you'd brief a colleague

Hold a key, say the background, the goal and what a good answer looks like, and LumeVoice types a clean prompt into Claude. The same key works in every other app. Free to start, no card needed.

Tips for voice prompts in Claude#

  • Say who it's for and why. "This goes to our board, who aren't technical, and they need to approve the budget" changes the answer more than any formatting instruction.
  • Describe a good answer. Length, format, tone, and anything to leave out.
  • Use spoken lists for steps. Anthropic recommends numbered steps when order matters. Say "first..., second..., third..." and LumeVoice formats a numbered list.
  • Paste the document, then dictate the question. For long material, Anthropic's guide recommends putting the document first and your question at the end, and says that can improve response quality by up to 30 percent in its tests, especially with complex inputs. Paste with the keyboard, click below the text, and talk.
  • Think out loud, then say the ask. A little rambling is fine; the filler and the bits you corrected don't make it into the prompt. Finish with a clear "So what I want from you is..."
  • Teach it your terms. Add product names, code names and acronyms to your custom dictionary so Claude sees the right words, not near-misses.

When Claude's own dictation is enough#

Claude's built-in dictation is good, and if Claude is the only place you want to talk instead of type, it may be all you need. It's included on every plan, Anthropic doesn't keep mobile dictation audio, and on a Mac the Caps Lock shortcut gets a question to Claude from anywhere. Voice mode is the better pick when you want to think out loud and hear answers, which LumeVoice doesn't do.

LumeVoice is worth adding when:

  • You switch tools all day. The same key works in Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Slack and your email.
  • You're on Windows. Claude's Caps Lock shortcut is Mac-only; LumeVoice's hold-to-talk key works in any Windows app with a text field.
  • You want more than a transcript. Filler removal, self-corrections, a custom dictionary, snippets and writing styles matter most for text that people, not just Claude, will read.

The short version#

Claude's dictation and voice mode work well inside Claude. LumeVoice brings the same talk-instead-of-type habit to every app, with your words cleaned up on the way in. Your audio isn't stored after processing, it's never used to train models, and your dictation history stays on your device.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Claude's dictation and voice mode?

Dictation turns your speech into text in the message box, and Claude replies in writing. Voice mode is a spoken conversation: you talk, Claude answers out loud, and the transcript is saved to your chat. As of October 2026, voice mode is in beta on all plans, works on web, desktop and mobile, and counts toward your usage limits.

Can I use LumeVoice with Claude Code?

Yes. LumeVoice types into your terminal the way it types anywhere else, so you can hold your key and speak a prompt into Claude Code on Mac or Windows. Claude Code also has its own dictation: run /voice and hold Space. Use whichever feels faster; LumeVoice adds cleanup and the same key in your other apps.

Does LumeVoice work with Claude on Windows?

Yes. LumeVoice runs in the Windows system tray: click into the Claude desktop app or claude.ai in any browser, hold Ctrl + Win, talk and let go. Claude's own microphone also works on Windows, but as of October 2026 its quick entry feature, including the Caps Lock dictation shortcut, is only available on Mac.

Will LumeVoice read Claude's answers aloud?

No. LumeVoice only writes: it turns what you say into text where your cursor is. It doesn't answer questions, send messages or speak. If you want Claude to talk back, use Claude's own voice mode, which is available on the web, in the desktop app and in the mobile apps.

Is my audio stored when I dictate to Claude with LumeVoice?

LumeVoice doesn't keep it. Your audio is sent for processing and isn't stored afterwards, and nothing you say is used to train models. Your dictation history stays on your device. The prompt you send is handled by Anthropic under its own policies, just like text you type into Claude.
