Gemini Speech to Text: Dictate Gemini Prompts by Voice

Google gives you several ways to talk to Gemini: the mic in the prompt box, Gemini Live, and newer dictation in Chrome and on the Mac. Each lives in its own place. LumeVoice works the same way in Gemini and every other app and browser, on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android.

  • Works in Gemini in any browser
  • 100 languages, detected automatically
  • Same key in Gmail, Docs and ChatGPT

Gemini speech to text is built into Google's apps: tap the microphone to speak a prompt, or go Live for a spoken conversation. As of October 2026, Google has also added Gemini-powered dictation to Chrome and to its Gemini app for Mac. Each works in its own corner. LumeVoice is one hold-a-key dictation for Gemini and every other app, on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android.

Short answer

Can Gemini do talk to text?

Yes. Tap the microphone in the Gemini app, say your prompt, and send it as text. Gemini Live is different: a spoken conversation where Gemini answers out loud. As of October 2026, Live works in the Gemini mobile apps and in Gemini in Chrome, but not in the Gemini web app.

Google's ways to talk to Gemini#

Google now offers four ways to talk to Gemini or type with it by voice. Here's how each works according to Google's help pages, as of October 2026.

The microphone: Gemini's built-in voice typing#

  • Phone: tap Microphone, say your prompt, and tap Send. The mic stays open for up to five minutes; tap Stop to pause and Microphone to carry on (Google's guide).
  • Mac app: click the Mic, say your prompt, then click Send. Google's Mac app needs an Apple Silicon Mac running macOS Sequoia or later.

One limit is worth knowing: the mic understands the language set in Gemini's language settings, and in the web app that's your browser or device language. Typed prompts and Gemini Live can use any supported language, so if you switch languages often, the mic is the weak spot.

Gemini Live#

Live is a back-and-forth conversation. In the mobile app, tap Live at the bottom or swipe left, then talk. You can interrupt Gemini mid-answer, and you get a transcript when you end the chat. Google says Live isn't available in the Gemini web app for now, though Gemini in Chrome has a Go Live option (Gemini Live help).

Chrome's talk to type#

Chrome on desktop has a Gemini-powered dictation feature called talk to type. It works in any text box in Chrome, cleans up your speech, adds punctuation, and takes spoken editing instructions. You need to be signed in to Chrome and outside Incognito. The first time, start it from the right-click menu; after that, press Option + Space on a Mac or Ctrl + Space on Windows and ChromeOS (Chrome help). It only works inside Chrome, and Google says Chrome collects your voice recording, typed words and page details to polish the text.

Speak to Window in the Mac app#

Still rolling out, Speak to Window lets you hold fn and talk to Gemini about whatever app you're in. Gemini decides whether to type or act: it can drop lightly cleaned-up text at your cursor, rewrite highlighted text, summarize files or create images (Gemini app on Mac). One heads-up: holding fn is also how you dictate with LumeVoice on a Mac.

How to dictate Gemini prompts with LumeVoice#

LumeVoice types into whatever text field has your cursor, so it works in the Gemini web app in any browser, in Google's Gemini app for Mac, and in the Gemini mobile apps. There's no extension to install.

  1. Click into Gemini's prompt box.
  2. Hold fn (Globe) on a Mac, or Ctrl + Win on Windows, and say what you need.
  3. Let go. The prompt appears with filler words removed, self-corrections applied and punctuation added.
  4. Read it and send. LumeVoice doesn't press Enter, and it doesn't read Gemini's answer aloud.

For a long prompt, double-press the key for hands-free mode and press once to finish. On Android, tap the floating bubble over your keyboard in the Gemini app and talk, keeping your usual keyboard. On iPhone, switch to the Lume keyboard.

Talk to Gemini in any browser

Hold a key, say your prompt, and LumeVoice types it into Gemini, cleaned up and ready to send. The same key works in Gmail, Google Docs and every other app. Free to start, no card needed.

Tips for dictating Gemini prompts#

Google's own prompting tips read like an argument for voice: talk to Gemini the way you would to a friend or colleague, and give it plenty of context. A few habits help you talk to Gemini well:

  • Speak in full sentences. Natural phrasing is what Google recommends, and it's how you talk anyway.
  • Use exact names. Google suggests specific, relevant keywords. Say the document title, the client's name or the date range you mean, and add names you use often to your custom dictionary so they come out spelled right.
  • One task per prompt. Google suggests splitting complex jobs into separate prompts. Dictate the first, read the answer, then dictate the next.
  • Say the format. "As a table with three columns," "in five bullet points," "under 100 words."
  • Correct as you go. "Summarize the March report, actually the April one" arrives as a request for the April report.
  • Switch languages freely. LumeVoice detects which of its 100 languages you're speaking, so there's no setting to change first.

When Google's built-in options are enough#

Google's tools are good, and for some people they're the better choice:

  • Quick questions on your phone. The Gemini mic is right there and free.
  • Thinking out loud. Gemini Live answers back; LumeVoice only writes.
  • You live in Chrome, or use Linux or a Chromebook. Talk to type works in every Chrome text box, and LumeVoice has no Linux or ChromeOS app.
  • You want to give commands, not just dictate. On an Apple Silicon Mac, Speak to Window can rewrite and summarize on request, which LumeVoice deliberately doesn't do.

LumeVoice fits when you want one tool across browsers, desktop apps and phones: the same key in Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude and Google Docs, plus a custom dictionary, snippets and writing styles.

The short version#

Use Gemini's mic for quick prompts, Live for conversation, and Chrome's talk to type if Chrome is your whole world. If you write across many apps and devices, LumeVoice gives you one way to talk instead of type everywhere. Your audio isn't stored after processing, it's never used to train models, and your dictation history stays on your device.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the Gemini mic and Gemini Live?

The mic turns one spoken prompt into text that you send, and Gemini replies as usual. Gemini Live is a free-flowing spoken conversation: Gemini answers out loud, you can interrupt it, and you get a transcript when you end the chat. As of October 2026, Live runs in the Gemini mobile apps and in Gemini in Chrome.

Is Gemini Live available on the web?

Not in the Gemini web app. As of October 2026, Google's help pages say Live isn't available at gemini.google.com for now. On a computer, Gemini in Chrome, which Google is still rolling out, has a Go Live option. On phones, Live is in the Gemini app for Android and iPhone: tap Live at the bottom of the screen or swipe left.

Do I need Chrome to use LumeVoice with Gemini?

No. LumeVoice is a desktop app, not a browser extension, so it types into Gemini in Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox or any other browser, and into Google's Gemini app for Mac. Hold fn on a Mac or Ctrl + Win on Windows, talk and let go. On phones, it works in the Gemini app through the Lume keyboard or the Android bubble.

Does LumeVoice work with the Gemini app on Android?

Yes. On Android, LumeVoice is a floating bubble over your keyboard: open the Gemini app, tap the prompt box, tap the bubble and talk, and the cleaned-up text appears in the box. You keep your normal keyboard, and the bubble works the same way in every other app on your phone.

Does LumeVoice work on a Chromebook or Linux?

No. LumeVoice runs on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, and there's no ChromeOS app, Linux app or browser extension. If you work on a Chromebook or a Linux computer, Chrome's own talk to type, which Google says runs on ChromeOS and Linux, is the better option for dictating into Gemini and other websites.

Is my audio stored when I dictate to Gemini with LumeVoice?

LumeVoice doesn't keep it. Your audio is sent for processing and isn't stored afterwards, and nothing you say is used to train models. Your dictation history stays on your device. Google only receives the finished prompt, which it handles under its own Gemini privacy terms, like anything you type.
