LumeVoice vs Just Press Record compares two very different apps that both start with you talking. Just Press Record is a recorder in the old-fashioned, useful sense: one big button, a saved audio file, and a transcript you can search later, for a one-time price, on Apple devices. LumeVoice doesn't keep recordings at all. It types what you say, cleaned up, into the app you're writing in, on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android.

A quick disclosure: LumeVoice is our product. We haven't used Just Press Record, so nothing here is a hands-on test. Facts come from Open Planet Software's product page and the US App Store listing, checked on October 20, 2026.

Short answer

Should I use Just Press Record or LumeVoice?

Use Just Press Record if you want to record and keep audio, such as lectures, interviews, rehearsals or ideas, on iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple Watch, for a one-time $6.99. Use LumeVoice if you want to write by voice: clean text typed straight into any app on Mac, Windows, iPhone or Android.

Who should pick which#

Pick Just Press Record if you:

  • want the audio itself, not just the words: a lecture, an interview, a song idea, a rehearsal
  • want to pay once and be done, at a few dollars
  • record with an external microphone and care about quality (it records up to 96kHz / 24-bit)
  • want to start recording from your Apple Watch without your phone nearby
  • like that its App Store privacy label says no data is collected

Pick LumeVoice if you:

  • want to write emails, messages and documents by talking
  • use Windows or Android
  • want filler words, stutters and self-corrections removed, not transcribed word for word
  • want spoken lists formatted and grammar fixed as you go

Just Press Record details as of October 2026.

A recorder versus a writer#

Just Press Record does one thing simply. Tap, it records, with no limit on length, in the background, with pause and resume. Recordings live in iCloud Drive and sync across your iPhone, iPad and Mac. It turns them into editable, searchable text in over 30 languages, whatever your device's language is set to. For people who need quality audio, it supports external microphones and saves in M4A, WAV or AIF at up to 96kHz / 24-bit. It also supports VoiceOver. Open Planet Software, the company behind it, describes itself as "Made in Scotland."

LumeVoice doesn't record anything for you to keep. You put your cursor in an email or a document, hold fn on a Mac or Ctrl + Win on Windows, talk, and let go; on iPhone you use the Lume keyboard, on Android a floating bubble. Your words arrive as finished text, with fillers and false starts gone, "nine, actually ten" written as "ten", and lists formatted. That's the right tool for writing, and the wrong one for preserving a lecture.

They work well together#

Just Press Record saves files, and LumeVoice's Mac and Windows apps can transcribe files. That gives you a simple workflow:

  1. Record the lecture or interview with Just Press Record on your iPhone or Watch.
  2. Let iCloud Drive sync it to your Mac.
  3. Transcribe the file with LumeVoice from the menu bar, or right-click it in Finder and choose Open With. LumeVoice handles m4a, wav and aiff, among other formats.
  4. Write up your notes by dictating with LumeVoice into your doc or notes app.

Just Press Record transcribes too, so step 3 is optional: use it if you'd rather have the transcript on your desktop alongside your other files. Keep in mind that LumeVoice's transcription runs in the cloud.

There's no contest on price: Just Press Record is far cheaper. It's a recorder, though, and LumeVoice is a dictation service with cloud processing on four platforms, so they aren't priced for the same job. Students get 50% off LumeVoice, and anyone who finds typing hard because of a disability or health condition gets 50% off, with no proof needed.

Turn Talking Into Writing

LumeVoice types what you say into any app, cleaned up and ready to send.

  • Hold, talk, let go: fn on Mac, Ctrl + Win on Windows; the Lume keyboard on iPhone; a bubble on Android.
  • File transcription on desktop: m4a, wav, aiff, mp3, mp4, mov and more.
  • Your audio isn't kept after processing, and nothing you say trains a model.

Every new account starts with 3,000 free words, no card required.

Download for MacMac (macOS 11.5+), Windows 10 & 11, iPhone and Android

Platforms#

Just Press Record runs on iPhone and iPad (iOS and iPadOS 18.6 or later), Mac (macOS 15.6 or later), Apple Watch (watchOS 10.6 or later) and Apple Vision Pro. The Watch app records when your iPhone isn't nearby and keeps recent recordings for playback through the Watch speaker or AirPods. There's no Android or Windows version.

LumeVoice runs on Mac (macOS 11.5+, so it suits older Macs Just Press Record no longer supports), Windows 10 and 11, iPhone (iOS 17+) and Android. It has no Watch app. See LumeVoice for Mac and LumeVoice for iPhone.

Privacy#

  • Just Press Record: the App Store privacy label reads "Data Not Collected," and recordings sync through your own iCloud Drive. Open Planet's pages don't say where transcription is processed.
  • LumeVoice: your audio is sent for processing and isn't stored afterwards, it's never used to train models, and your dictation history stays on your device. It needs an internet connection.

Where Just Press Record is the better choice#

  • Keeping the audio, in quality formats, with external microphones
  • Unlimited recording length and background recording
  • One low, one-time price with no subscription
  • Apple Watch recording without your phone
  • A "Data Not Collected" privacy label
  • Rated 4.3 from about 1.5K ratings in the US App Store

Where LumeVoice is the better choice#

  • Writing straight into any app, not a recording library
  • Cleanup: fillers, stutters and self-corrections removed, lists and grammar fixed
  • Windows and Android, plus older Macs back to macOS 11.5
  • 100 languages against over 30

The bottom line#

If you need a dependable recorder for Apple devices, Just Press Record is hard to argue with at $6.99. If you need to write by voice, it isn't the tool, and LumeVoice is. Many people would keep both: one to capture the sound, one to turn their own words into text. For other recorders, compare LumeVoice vs Whisper Memos and LumeVoice vs Voicenotes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Just Press Record and LumeVoice?

Just Press Record is an audio recorder: one tap starts a recording on your iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple Watch, it keeps the audio file, and it can transcribe it into searchable text. LumeVoice is a dictation app: you talk while your cursor is in an email, doc or chat, and cleaned-up text is typed there. It doesn't keep a library of recordings.

How much does Just Press Record cost?

In the US App Store it's $6.99, paid once, with no in-app purchases listed, as of October 2026. That's much cheaper than LumeVoice, which starts with 3,000 free words, no card required and then costs $14.99/mo, $79.99/year or $249 once. The two do different jobs, so compare what you need before comparing price.

Is there Just Press Record for Android or Windows?

No. Just Press Record is for Apple devices only: iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple Vision Pro. LumeVoice runs on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, but as a dictation app rather than a recorder. On Android or Windows you'd pair LumeVoice with a recorder made for that platform if you need to keep audio.

Can LumeVoice transcribe a Just Press Record recording?

Yes, on a Mac or Windows PC. Just Press Record saves recordings as M4A, WAV or AIF files and can sync them through iCloud Drive. LumeVoice's desktop apps transcribe audio and video files, including m4a, wav and aiff, from the menu bar, Finder's Open With menu or Explorer's right-click menu. Transcription runs in the cloud, so it needs a connection.

Which is more private?

Just Press Record's App Store privacy label says the developer collects no data from the app, and recordings sync through your own iCloud Drive. LumeVoice sends audio for processing, doesn't store it after processing, never uses it to train models and keeps your dictation history on your device. If you want a recorder that collects nothing, Just Press Record has the cleaner label.

Does Just Press Record work on Apple Watch?

Yes. Its Watch app records even when your iPhone isn't nearby, keeps recent recordings on the Watch for playback, and sends them to your iPhone to be transcribed and synced. You can also start a recording on the Watch with a Siri Shortcut. LumeVoice has no Apple Watch app.
