LumeVoice vs Whisper Memos comes down to when you want your words to turn into text. Whisper Memos is a voice recorder for iPhone and Apple Watch: you record a thought, and a formatted transcript arrives in your email. LumeVoice is voice typing: you speak while you're writing, and the text appears in that app straight away. Plenty of people would use both.
A quick disclosure: LumeVoice is our product. We haven't used Whisper Memos, so nothing below is a hands-on test. What we say about it comes from whispermemos.com and its App Store listing, checked on October 20, 2026.
Short answer
Should I use Whisper Memos or LumeVoice?
Use Whisper Memos to capture ideas on the go: tap record on your iPhone or Apple Watch, talk for up to 90 minutes, and get a transcript with a summary by email. Use LumeVoice to write by voice: emails, messages and documents typed straight into any app on Mac, Windows, iPhone or Android.

Two different moments#
Whisper Memos catches the thought. Its pitch is that you shouldn't lose an idea because your phone was in your pocket. You can start a memo from a Lock Screen widget, a Shortcut on the Action Button, Siri or the Apple Watch app, and you can record without a signal; the memo syncs later. Once it is transcribed, an email arrives with the transcript split into paragraphs and a summary on top. The developer also lists a meeting mode with speaker separation, reminders aimed at people with ADHD, audio-file import, and "agents" that route memos to different places.
LumeVoice writes the thing. It doesn't keep recordings or send you anything. You put your cursor in Gmail, Slack, Word or Notion, hold fn on a Mac or Ctrl + Win on Windows, talk, and let go. On iPhone you switch to the Lume keyboard in any app; on Android you tap a floating bubble over your usual keyboard. What lands is finished text: fillers removed, "let's say ten, actually twelve" turned into "twelve", spoken lists turned into lists, grammar fixed.
If your notes tend to pile up as unprocessed memos, that's a sign you need the second kind of tool as much as the first. For a broader take on getting thoughts down quickly, see dictation for ADHD.
Price and 3-year cost#
Whisper Memos is free to download, with subscriptions sold in the app. Its site advertises "starting at $5/month"; the US App Store lists these purchases (App Store):

On yearly plans, Whisper Memos costs less. LumeVoice's case is the one-time license and the fact that one plan covers four platforms. Students get 50% off LumeVoice, and anyone who finds typing hard gets 50% off, with no proof needed.
Write the Email, Not Just the Memo
LumeVoice turns what you say into finished text in whatever app you're using.
- Desktop and phone: hold fn on Mac or Ctrl + Win on Windows; the Lume keyboard on iPhone; a floating bubble on Android.
- Cleanup as you talk: fillers removed, self-corrections applied, lists formatted.
- 100 languages, detected automatically.
- Your audio isn't kept after processing, and nothing you say trains a model.
Every new account starts with 3,000 free words, no card required.
Platforms#
Whisper Memos is an iPhone app (iOS 17.6 or later) with an Apple Watch app (watchOS 10.6 or later). The App Store says the iPhone app can run on Macs with an M1 chip or later, but marks it "Designed for iPhone. Not verified for macOS." There's no Android or Windows version.
LumeVoice has native apps for Mac (macOS 11.5+) and Windows 10 and 11, the Lume keyboard on iPhone (iOS 17+), and a floating bubble on Android. It has no Apple Watch app. More on LumeVoice for iPhone.
Privacy#
Both use the cloud, in different ways.
- Whisper Memos sends recordings to the transcription model you pick and emails the result. Its site says recordings are processed by AI and stored securely, and that a private mode deletes the transcript after delivery so nothing stays on its servers.
- LumeVoice sends your audio for processing and doesn't store it afterwards, never uses what you say to train models, and keeps your dictation history on your device. It needs an internet connection.
Email is a design choice worth thinking about: with Whisper Memos, your transcripts end up wherever your email lives.

The bottom line#
Whisper Memos is a good inbox for your thoughts, especially if you wear an Apple Watch. LumeVoice is a way to write without typing, on four platforms. If you only ever need one, ask yourself whether you're mostly capturing ideas or mostly writing messages and documents.
