Aqua Voice is cloud dictation built around its own speech model, Avalon. It runs on Mac, Windows, iPhone and, since October 6, 2026, Android, and its Edit Mode lets you rewrite selected text by saying what to change. Aqua pitches it hard at people who dictate prompts and code. Still, people look for Aqua Voice alternatives for clear reasons: a small free allowance, a cloud-only design, features that moved to a pricier plan, and no way to pay once.
Here are seven alternatives, what each is built for, and what it costs as of October 20, 2026. LumeVoice is our product and it's on this list, so weigh our view accordingly. We haven't used Aqua Voice ourselves; what we say about it, and about the other apps, comes from each company's website, help pages and app store listings. For the head-to-head, see LumeVoice vs Aqua Voice.
Why people look for an Aqua Voice alternative#
Most reasons point to a particular kind of app:
- The free plan is a short test. Aqua's free plan covers 1,000 words, which its own Mac page puts at about seven minutes of talking, and then asks you to upgrade (Aqua for Mac). 9to5Mac's reviewer called it "effectively just a very brief free trial" (9to5Mac review).
- Live text moved up a tier. Realtime Mode, which shows your words as you speak, and the "send it" command now come with Max ($24 a month billed annually, $30 month to month) and Business. Aqua says older Pro subscriptions kept them; new Pro plans don't include them (Realtime Mode).
- It's cloud-only on desktop. Aqua says it processes audio in the cloud and has no offline mode on Mac or Windows. The same 9to5Mac review, from August 2025, raised the question of sending sensitive dictation to a server, and reported connection errors, including one outage that took about 20 minutes to clear.
- No pay-once option. Aqua is subscription-only, and its terms say fees paid are non-refundable (terms).
- Languages. Aqua lists 49 dictation languages (language guide). LumeVoice, Wispr Flow, Superwhisper and Spokenly each support 100 or more.
- Linux. Aqua has no Linux dictation app.
- Long dictations. Aqua's own reviews page notes that Wirecutter's testers reported missing text in longer sessions and unwanted dictionary substitutions, and it doesn't claim those issues are fixed (Aqua's reviews page). Whatever you choose, test it on long passages.

How we compared them#
This list is based on what each company documents and charges, not on a lab test. We looked at where each app runs, whether it works without an internet connection, what you get free, what it costs to keep, and what it does to your words beyond plain transcription.
We don't publish accuracy scores. Results depend on your microphone, accent and vocabulary, and we don't know of an independent benchmark that covers these apps under the same conditions; Aqua's published scores come from its own benchmark. The fairest test is your own writing, and every app here has a free plan, a free allowance or a trial.
Where LumeVoice Fits
LumeVoice is for people who like how Aqua Voice works on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, and want more languages or a license they buy once.
- Cleanup as you talk: filler words and stutters removed, self-corrections applied ("seven, actually nine" becomes "nine"), spoken lists turned into lists.
- 100 languages, detected automatically, with an option to get your text in another language.
- Your audio isn't kept: it isn't stored after processing, your history stays on your device, and nothing you say is used to train models.
- The tradeoff: it needs an internet connection, and it has no voice editing of selected text, no live preview and no team plan.
1. LumeVoice#
LumeVoice
Verdict: Closest Cloud Swap, With a Pay-Once Plan
LumeVoice works much like Aqua: hold a key, talk, let go, and finished text lands wherever your cursor is. On a Mac it lives in the menu bar (hold fn); on Windows it sits in the system tray (hold Ctrl + Win). You can pick another shortcut, and a double-press turns on hands-free mode. On iPhone it's the Lume keyboard; on Android it's a floating bubble over your usual keyboard. Setup details: Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android.
Whisper large-v3-turbo on Groq transcribes your speech in the cloud, with Mistral's Voxtral as a fallback, and a language model then removes filler words and stutters, applies your self-corrections, turns spoken lists into real lists, and fixes grammar and spelling.
- Platforms: Mac (macOS 11.5+), Windows 10 and 11, iPhone (iOS 17+), Android
- Extras: custom dictionary, snippets, writing styles, output language, audio and video file transcription on desktop, 100 languages
- Privacy: audio isn't stored after processing, history stays on your device, and nothing you say is used to train models. It needs an internet connection.
- Pricing: 3,000 free words, no card required to start | Pro Monthly $14.99/mo | Pro Annual $79.99/year | Lifetime $249. Students get 50% off, and anyone who finds typing hard because of a disability, injury or health condition gets 50% off, with no proof needed (accessibility discount, LumeVoice pricing).
Skip it if: you rely on Edit Mode or Realtime Mode, need offline dictation, Linux or a team plan, or want the deepest student discount (Aqua's 70% is bigger than our 50% off).
2. Wispr Flow#
Wispr Flow
Verdict: Best Free Plan, Plus Meeting Notes
Wispr Flow is Aqua's most direct rival: cloud dictation on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, 100-plus languages, a dictionary and snippets, and Command Mode for editing highlighted text by voice on Mac and Windows (a paid feature). Every plan also includes Notetaker, which records meetings on your Mac or PC without a bot joining the call (Wispr Flow pricing).
Its free plan is the main draw: 2,000 words a week on Mac and Windows, resetting every Sunday, with smaller caps on phones (750 words a week on iPhone and 1,500 on Android, per Wispr's help center). Transcription always happens in the cloud. For companies it lists SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001, and a Growth plan with a signed BAA.
- Pricing: Free | Pro $15 per user per month, or $12 billed annually ($144 a year) | Growth $18 per user per month billed annually. Students new to Pro get 3 months free, then 50% off.
- Compared with Aqua: a free plan that renews, meeting notes and more languages, but Pro costs $48 a year more than Aqua Pro
Skip it if: you want the lowest yearly price or a one-time license, or you need to dictate offline. More in our Wispr Flow pricing guide and Aqua Voice vs Wispr Flow.
3. Superwhisper#
Superwhisper
Verdict: Best for Offline and Local Privacy
Superwhisper is the pick when your audio shouldn't leave your device. Each dictation passes through a voice model and, optionally, a language model, and either can run locally or in the cloud; choose local models for both and nothing leaves your computer (sensitive data guide). Local models work offline on Mac, Windows and iPhone, and its cloud models run under zero-data-retention agreements.
It runs on macOS 14 or later, Windows 10 and 11 (x64 and ARM64), iPhone, and Android phones running Android 13 or later. The free plan gives unlimited dictation with local Whisper models, up to two modes and no AI processing, and new users get a 3,000-word taste of Pro (plans and pricing). Pro adds cloud models, AI modes, file transcription, Meetings on the Mac and your own API keys.
- Pricing: Free | Pro $8.49/month, $84.99/year or $249.99 once. Students, educators and non-profits get 40% off on its website, and there's a 30-day refund.
- Compared with Aqua: offline use, a free plan you can keep, a lifetime license and 100-plus languages; modes are stored per device by default rather than synced
Skip it if: you'd rather not pick models and set up modes, or you want offline dictation on Android, which its Android pages don't mention. See Superwhisper vs Aqua Voice.
4. Voicy#
Voicy
Verdict: Best for Linux and the Browser
Voicy reaches more places than any other app here: Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone, Android and a Chrome extension. Its desktop apps have an offline mode that transcribes on your computer in 25 languages after a one-time model download, and it handles more than 50 languages online (offline dictation). Rewrite Mode edits selected text by voice, much like Aqua's Edit Mode (Rewrite Mode).
There's no free plan, only a 30-minute trial with no card. After that it's one of the cheaper paid apps, with a lifetime option and a plan for small teams.
- Pricing: $8.49/month, $82/year or $260 once | Teams $6.79 per user per month, minimum three users. Students and people with disabilities get 20% off.
- Compared with Aqua: Linux, a browser extension, a desktop offline mode and a lifetime license, but no free plan
Skip it if: you want a free plan you can keep using. More in our Voicy review and LumeVoice vs Voicy.
5. VoiceInk#
VoiceInk
Verdict: Best One-Time Price on a Mac
VoiceInk is an open-source Mac app that transcribes with local models, so it works offline and your voice stays on your Mac. An optional Cloud Enhancement sends only the transcribed text, not the audio, if you switch it on (VoiceInk). It needs an Apple silicon Mac with macOS 14.4 or later, and there's now an iPhone app as well.
- Pricing: one-time $25 for one Mac, $39 for two or $49 for three, with lifetime updates and a 14-day money-back guarantee. There's a free trial, and the source code is on GitHub.
- Compared with Aqua: offline, private and far cheaper over time, but Mac-first, with no Windows or Android app
Skip it if: you use Windows, Android or an Intel Mac.
6. Spokenly#
Spokenly
Verdict: Best Free Local Option Across Platforms
Spokenly doesn't charge for its local models: Whisper and Parakeet run on your own device, without a word limit, on macOS, Windows, Linux and iOS (Spokenly pricing). It supports more than 100 languages, and you can bring your own API keys for cloud models and AI cleanup. Pro adds Spokenly's hosted cloud models and AI text cleanup that works without setup.
- Pricing: Free with local models | Local+ $29 once (extras such as settings sync) | Pro $9.99/month or $99.99/year
- Compared with Aqua: free, works offline and runs on Linux; no Android app yet (there's a waitlist)
Skip it if: you want finished text without choosing models or managing API keys, or you need Android.
7. Built-in dictation#
Apple Dictation, Windows voice typing and Gboard
Verdict: Best Free Option
If you only dictate now and then, start with what's already on your devices.
Apple Dictation is built into Mac and iPhone. On a Mac, Keyboard settings show which languages are processed on the device. On iPhone, Apple says dictation is processed on the phone in many languages, with no internet connection required (Apple's iPhone guide).
Windows voice typing starts with Windows + H and needs an internet connection. On Copilot+ PCs, Fluid dictation (English) also removes filler words and fixes grammar (Microsoft's guide).
Gboard has voice typing built in on Android, and on a Pixel 6 or later its advanced voice typing stays on the phone. Pixel 11 owners also get Rambler, which removes filler words and rewrites by voice.
- Pros: free, already installed, some processing on the device
- Cons: less cleanup than the paid apps, and nothing that carries your dictionary across Mac, Windows and Android
When to stay with Aqua Voice#
Some of Aqua's strengths are hard to replace:
- You edit by voice. Edit Mode is included on every plan and works in any desktop app, and the phone apps can edit by voice too. Wispr Flow saves its equivalent for paid plans.
- You dictate prompts and code. Aqua turns spoken file names into tags in Cursor, Windsurf, Cline and Antigravity, and its command-line tool and MCP server let coding agents manage your dictionary (file tagging).
- You're a student. With a school email, Aqua takes 70% off Pro and Max, which brings Pro to $2.40 a month on annual billing. Nothing else here comes close.
- Your company needs paperwork. Aqua has a SOC 2 Type II report and ISO 27001 certification, a BAA path for healthcare teams, and a Business plan with single sign-on, SCIM and zero data retention (Trust and security).
- You already pay for Max. Realtime Mode with "send it" is a distinctive hands-free workflow; try the alternatives with it in mind.
- You use an Android tablet. Aqua's Android app supports tablets; Superwhisper's Android app is for phones only.
Price comparison#
| App | Free option | Per month | Per year | Pay once | 3 years on yearly billing |

| Spokenly | Unlimited local dictation | $9.99 | $99.99 | Local+ $29 (no cloud models) | $299.97 |
| VoiceInk | Free trial | None | None | From $25 | $25 |

For students the order changes: Aqua Voice takes 70% off, LumeVoice 50% off, Wispr Flow 50% off Pro after three free months, Superwhisper 40% and Voicy 20%. Aqua's full plan list, including what Max adds and what its iPhone app charges, is in our Aqua Voice pricing guide.
How to switch from Aqua Voice#
- List what you actually use. If Edit Mode, Realtime Mode, file tagging or synced Custom Instructions are part of your day, check that the new app covers them before going further.
- Save your words. Copy the terms from your Aqua dictionary, or run
aqua dict listif you use its command-line tool, and note your Replacements and Custom Instructions (Aqua CLI). - Try the new app on real work for a few days, using its free plan, allowance or trial.
- Cancel Aqua before it renews. Web subscriptions are managed from Aqua's account page; subscriptions bought in the iPhone or Android app are managed by Apple or Google (Aqua FAQ). Aqua's terms say fees are non-refundable, so time the switch to your renewal date.
Final verdict#
- Closest cloud swap, with more languages and a lifetime plan: LumeVoice
- Best free plan, plus meeting notes: Wispr Flow
- Best for offline and local privacy: Superwhisper
- Best for Linux and the browser: Voicy
- Best one-time price on a Mac: VoiceInk
- Best free local option across platforms: Spokenly
- Best free option: the dictation already built into your devices
And if you edit by voice all day, dictate code into AI editors or qualify for the student discount, Aqua Voice remains a strong choice.
