Dragon Pricing 2026: Professional, Legal and Medical Costs

Short answer

How much does Dragon cost in 2026?

Nuance doesn't publish Dragon prices; its pages ask you to contact sales. As of October 2026, US retailers sell a single Dragon Professional v16 license for about $699, paid once (CDW listed it at $677.99). Dragon Legal, the cloud-hosted Anywhere editions and Dragon Medical One are priced by quote, and the Dragon Anywhere mobile app is no longer sold.

Dragon Professional v16 costs about $699, paid once, if you buy a single license from a US retailer. That's the closest thing Dragon has to a list price in 2026, because Nuance, now part of Microsoft, no longer prints prices on its own site. Dragon Legal, the cloud-hosted Anywhere editions and Dragon Medical One are all priced by quote.

Below is every Dragon edition still sold, how each is bought, what changed in 2026, and the 3-year math next to other dictation apps. A disclosure first: LumeVoice is our product. We haven't used Dragon ourselves, so everything here comes from Nuance's and Microsoft's own pages, Nuance's release notes, its App Store listing and a reseller's listing, checked on October 20, 2026.

As of October 2026, from Nuance's Dragon pages, Microsoft's Dragon Medical One page, Dragon Copilot and a CDW listing.

A few things the table doesn't show:

  • There's no online store. Nuance's Dragon pages have a "Contact us" link for licensing and an account login, but no cart and no prices. Single licenses are sold mostly through resellers.
  • There's no consumer edition. Nuance lists Dragon Professional, Legal, Law Enforcement and the Anywhere editions; nothing is aimed at home users anymore.
  • There are no published discounts. Nuance's Dragon pages don't mention student, teacher or accessibility pricing.
  • There's no trial to sign up for. An installed copy that hasn't been activated launches five times in trial mode, per Nuance's release notes: a grace period, not a trial.
  • Refunds depend on the seller. Nuance's Dragon pages don't state a refund policy, so check the reseller's return terms before you buy.

Dragon Professional v16: about $699 once#

Dragon Professional is the general-purpose desktop edition, and the only one you can price without talking to a salesperson. On October 20, 2026, CDW listed "Dragon Professional (v. 16) - license - 1 license" at $677.99, and other US retailers list it at about $699. You pay once and keep using that version.

According to Nuance's product page, the license gets you:

  • custom voice commands that insert boilerplate text or a signature, and macros that automate multi-step workflows
  • custom words, commands and auto-texts that can be shared across users
  • transcription of recordings from a single speaker, with an Auto Transcribe Folder Agent for batches
  • volume licensing and Nuance Management Center, for organizations

Before you buy, check your PC against the Dragon Professional 16.1 release notes: Windows 11 (64-bit) or Windows 10, at least 4 GB of RAM, a 2.2 GHz dual-core processor, 12 GB of free disk space, and an internet connection to activate. The same notes say Apple AirPods aren't officially supported for dictation, so budget for a headset if you don't own one.

Upgrades are sold separately. Moving to version 16 from an older version is its own upgrade license, which resellers list for version 15 owners.

Dragon Legal adds what lawyers pay for: a legal vocabulary that Nuance says was trained on more than 400 million words from legal documents, automatic formatting of legal citations, commands that insert standard clauses, and word lists you can create, import and share (Dragon Legal). Nuance also lists a mouse grid that works across several monitors, audio playback of what you dictated, and support for its PowerMic 4 microphone. Like Professional, it runs on Windows 11 and 10.

Nuance doesn't show a price; the page sends you to its licensing team. Resellers sell full licenses and upgrades from version 15, so ask for both prices if you own an older copy.

Dragon Professional Anywhere: a subscription for organizations#

Dragon Professional Anywhere is "cloud-hosted speech recognition for the enterprise and public sector", running on Microsoft Azure, with "subscription-based pricing with little up-front capital investment" (Dragon Professional Anywhere). It supports Citrix, VMware Horizon and Microsoft Remote Desktop Services, and Nuance Management Center handles users centrally. Dragon Legal Anywhere is its legal counterpart: custom commands and auto-texts sync between it and Dragon Legal on the desktop.

There's no list price or stated minimum number of users; you contact sales. Ask about mobile, too: the page still describes the Dragon Anywhere app as included, but it stopped selling on July 1, 2026.

Dragon Medical One and Dragon Copilot#

In healthcare, Dragon is sold by Microsoft rather than Nuance. Microsoft's Dragon Medical One page still presents it as a product, with a link for customers to buy more licenses and a prompt to "take your Dragon Medical One experience to the next level with Dragon Copilot". Its features include PowerMic Mobile, which turns a smartphone into a wireless microphone, voice commands for moving through patient charts, AutoText that can be shared across departments, and integrations with Epic, Oracle Cerner and MEDITECH.

Dragon Copilot is Microsoft's "AI clinical assistant", which turns conversations into specialty-specific notes. For physicians, it runs in a web browser, a mobile app, a desktop app and inside supported EHRs, and it's available in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands and Switzerland.

Neither page lists a price. You'll find per-user figures on other websites, but they come from resellers, consultants and competitors, not from Microsoft. Get a quote that spells out the contract length, onboarding and hardware such as PowerMic.

Dragon Anywhere and Dragon for Mac: no longer sold#

Dragon Anywhere, the iPhone and Android app, stopped selling on July 1, 2026. Its App Store release notes (version 1.96) say: "Purchasing new subscriptions and renewing existing subscriptions is no longer possible" (App Store listing). Some Nuance pages still describe it, but you can't buy it.

Dragon for Mac was discontinued on October 22, 2018, and no Mac edition has replaced it. Our guide to Dragon for Mac alternatives covers what Mac users moved to.

Prices as of October 2026, before tax, upgrades and hardware.

A desktop license front-loads the cost: one large payment, then nothing until you choose to upgrade. That's Dragon's pricing advantage, because the longer you use one version, the less it costs per year. The catch is that it ties you to Windows; there's no Mac edition to move it to.

Try Dictation Before You Spend Hundreds

LumeVoice turns your speech into clean text in whatever app you're using, on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android.

  • Cleanup as you talk: filler words and stutters removed, self-corrections applied, spoken lists turned into lists.
  • Your vocabulary: a custom dictionary on Mac and Windows, plus snippets for text you repeat.
  • Pricing: $14.99/mo, $79.99/year or $249 once, with 50% off for students and 50% off for accessibility.
  • The tradeoffs: it needs an internet connection, and it has no voice commands or macros.

Every new account starts with 3,000 free words, no card required.

Prices as of October 2026, from each vendor's site; vendors change them, so check before you buy.

Dragon is the only app here that costs hundreds of dollars before you've dictated a word, and the only one that runs on Windows alone. It's also the only one with legal and medical editions and a full set of voice commands and macros, which is what that price buys.

Over three years, LumeVoice Pro Annual comes to $239.97 and Wispr Flow Pro to $432 on yearly billing, both less than one Dragon license; Wispr Flow only passes Dragon's price in its fifth year. If you'd rather pay once, Superwhisper and LumeVoice both sell lifetime licenses for less than Dragon.

Try the free option first, too. Windows 11's voice access lets you control your PC and write by voice at no cost, and works without an internet connection once a language's speech pack is downloaded. It lacks Dragon's legal and medical editions. Our LumeVoice vs Dragon comparison covers the features side by side.

Is Dragon worth the money?#

Dragon is good value if you:

  • work on Windows all day and use voice commands, macros or auto-texts constantly
  • need Dragon Legal's vocabulary and citation formatting
  • want dictation software installed on your PC rather than a cloud service
  • work for an organization that already licenses Dragon
  • plan to use the same version for years

Look elsewhere if you:

  • use a Mac, an iPhone or an Android phone, where Dragon isn't available
  • mostly write emails and documents, where a dictation app with automatic cleanup costs less
  • want to try before you pay, since Nuance doesn't advertise a trial
  • need a student or accessibility discount: Nuance's Dragon pages don't list one, while LumeVoice gives 50% off to students and teachers and 50% off to anyone who finds typing hard (accessibility discount)

The bottom line#

Dragon's pricing is simple to describe and awkward to find: about $699 once for Dragon Professional v16 from a US reseller, and a quote for everything else. For a Windows user who lives in voice commands, macros or legal vocabulary, a one-time license used for years is reasonable value. For everyone else, and especially on a Mac or a phone, it's a lot to pay before you've tried it. Our Wispr Flow vs Dragon comparison shows how it stacks up against a modern subscription app.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Dragon a one-time purchase or a subscription?

It depends on the edition. Dragon Professional and Dragon Legal v16 for Windows are licenses you pay for once, mostly through resellers. Dragon Professional Anywhere, the cloud-hosted edition for organizations, uses subscription pricing. Dragon Medical One and Dragon Copilot are sold to healthcare organizations by Microsoft. Nuance and Microsoft publish no prices for any of them, so you contact sales or a reseller.

Is there a free trial of Dragon?

Nuance's Dragon pages don't offer one. Its release notes say an installed copy that hasn't been activated launches five times in trial mode, but that's a grace period after installing, not a trial you can sign up for. Check the reseller's return policy before you buy. If you want to try dictation first, apps such as LumeVoice and Wispr Flow have free starting allowances.

How much does Dragon Medical One cost?

Microsoft doesn't publish a price. Dragon Medical One is sold to healthcare organizations, and Microsoft's page offers existing customers more licenses and a move to Dragon Copilot, its AI clinical assistant. The per-user figures you'll find online come from resellers, consultants and competitors, not Microsoft, so get a quote that covers contract length, onboarding and hardware such as PowerMic.

Is Dragon Anywhere still available?

No. Nuance stopped selling Dragon Anywhere on July 1, 2026. Its App Store release notes say purchasing new subscriptions and renewing existing ones is no longer possible. Some Nuance product pages still describe it, but you can't buy it. For dictation on a phone, apps such as LumeVoice and Wispr Flow run on iPhone and Android.

Is Dragon worth $699?

If you work on Windows and use its voice commands, macros or legal vocabulary every day, a one-time license you keep using for years can be good value. If you mostly write emails and documents, or you use a Mac or a phone, a dictation app costs less to start: LumeVoice Pro Annual is $79.99/year or $249 once, and new accounts get 3,000 free words, no card required.
