Best Monologue Alternatives in 2026: 7 Dictation Apps Compared

Short answer

What is the best alternative to Monologue?

It depends on why you're leaving. Superwhisper is the closest match, with modes and local models on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. Wispr Flow is the direct cloud rival and adds Windows and Android at the same price. LumeVoice suits cleanup without setup on all four platforms for less per year. Spokenly and VoiceInk are low-cost local picks.

Monologue is a dictation app from Every for Mac, iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. It turns rough speech into formatted text in any app, records voice notes and meetings without a bot, and on Apple silicon Macs it can transcribe without internet. Pro costs $15 a month or $144 a year, and the iPhone app averages 4.8 stars from 298 ratings in the US App Store (App Store). People still look for Monologue alternatives, usually because they need Windows or Android, want to pay less or pay once, or only need dictation.

Here are seven alternatives, what each is built for and what it costs as of October 20, 2026. LumeVoice is our product and it's on this list, so weigh our view accordingly. We haven't used Monologue ourselves; what we say about it comes from its website, documentation, terms of service and App Store listing. For the head-to-head, see LumeVoice vs Monologue, and for Monologue's most direct rival, Monologue vs Wispr Flow.

Why look for a Monologue alternative?#

  • It's Apple-only. Monologue's docs say it doesn't offer Windows or Android apps and make no promises about other platforms (platform availability).
  • Offline means an Apple silicon Mac. Local transcription works only on Apple silicon Macs, smart formatting still needs a connection, and the iPhone and iPad apps send your audio to Monologue's services (permissions and privacy).
  • It costs as much as Wispr Flow. Pro is $15 a month or $144 a year, with no one-time license and no student discount on its pricing page (pricing). The free trial (1,000 dictation words and 10 recorded notes) is a short taste, and its terms say past payments aren't refunded (terms).
  • You may only need dictation. Pro bundles voice notes and meeting notes with dictation; if you never record a note, part of what you pay for goes unused.
  • Your company needs paperwork. Monologue's own comparison page lists no public SOC 2, ISO 27001, single sign-on or HIPAA details (Monologue vs Wispr Flow).

Is there a Monologue for Windows or Android?#

No, and it hasn't announced other platforms. If you're moving to a Windows PC or an Android phone, or use one alongside your Mac, these picks cover them:

  • Closest match, with local models: Superwhisper, on Windows 10 and 11 and on Android 13 or later.
  • The same kind of cloud app, with a meeting Notetaker on Windows: Wispr Flow.
  • Cleanup without setup, for less per year: LumeVoice (hold Ctrl + Win on Windows; a floating bubble on Android) or Aqua Voice.
  • Free on Windows: Spokenly's local models or Handy. Windows voice typing (Windows + H) is built in and needs an internet connection.

How we compared them#

This list is based on what each vendor documents and charges, not on a lab test: where each app runs, whether it can transcribe on your own computer, what's free, what it costs, and what you'd give up compared with Monologue. We don't publish accuracy scores, because results depend on your microphone, accent, vocabulary and hardware. All seven can be tried for free.

Where LumeVoice Fits

LumeVoice is for Monologue users who need Windows or Android, or want to pay less, and can live without voice notes.

  • Four platforms, one plan: Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android.
  • Cleanup as you talk: filler words and stutters removed, self-corrections applied, spoken lists turned into lists.
  • Pay yearly or once: Pro Annual is $79.99/year and Lifetime is $249, against Monologue's $144 a year.
  • Your audio isn't kept: it isn't stored after processing, your history stays on your device, and nothing you say is used to train models.
  • The trade-off: it needs an internet connection, and it has no voice notes, meeting notes or Apple Watch app.

1. Superwhisper#

Superwhisper

Verdict: Closest Match, on More Devices and for Less

Superwhisper covers most of what Monologue does, on more devices. It runs speech models on your own computer or in the cloud, lets you build modes, including AI modes with your own prompts, that switch on by app or website, and records meetings on macOS with Pro (Superwhisper). One Pro license covers your Macs and Windows PCs plus your iPhone and Android phone (plans).

Its free plan gives unlimited dictation with local Whisper models; Pro adds hosted cloud models, more local models, AI modes and file transcription.

  • Platforms: macOS, Windows 10 and 11, iPhone, Android 13 or later (phones only)
  • Pricing: Free plan | Pro $8.49/month, $84.99/year or $249.99 once. Verified students, educators and non-profits get 40% off, and purchases on its site have a 30-day refund window.
  • Compared with Monologue: more setup, since you pick the models and write the mode prompts yourself

Skip it if: you rely on Monologue's voice notes on your iPhone or Apple Watch. Superwhisper's meeting recording is a macOS feature. More in LumeVoice vs Superwhisper and Superwhisper pricing.

2. Wispr Flow#

Wispr Flow

Verdict: The Direct Rival, Plus Windows and Android

The two compete head-on: Monologue publishes a comparison with Wispr Flow and can import its dictionary. Wispr Flow is a cloud dictation app for Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android that removes filler words, fixes grammar and uses the app you're in to set the tone, with a dictionary, snippets and 100+ languages (Wispr Flow pricing). Its Notetaker records meetings on Mac and Windows, and Pro adds Command Mode for editing highlighted text by voice.

  • Pricing: Free (2,000 words a week on Mac and Windows, limited weekly use on iPhone and Android) | Pro $15 per user per month, or $12 a month billed annually ($144 a year). Students new to Pro get 3 months free with a .edu email, then 50% off.
  • For companies: SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certification, and a Growth plan ($18 per user per month billed annually) with single sign-on and HIPAA under a signed BAA
  • Missing compared with Monologue: dictation without internet (Wispr says transcription always happens in the cloud, per its data controls), and an Apple Watch app

Skip it if: price was your reason to leave. It costs exactly what Monologue Pro does. More in Monologue vs Wispr Flow and our Wispr Flow pricing guide.

3. LumeVoice#

LumeVoice

Verdict: Best for Cleanup Without Setup, on All Four Platforms

LumeVoice does dictation and nothing else: hold a key, talk, and clean text lands where your cursor is. It transcribes in the cloud, then removes filler words and stutters, applies self-corrections, turns spoken lists into numbered or bulleted lists, and fixes grammar and spelling, with no modes or instructions to set up.

On Mac it lives in the menu bar (hold fn), and on Windows in the system tray (hold Ctrl + Win); double-press the shortcut for hands-free. On iPhone it's the Lume keyboard, and on Android a floating bubble over your keyboard.

  • Platforms: Mac (macOS 11.5+), Windows 10 and 11, iPhone (iOS 17+), Android
  • Extras: custom dictionary, snippets, writing styles, output language, audio and video file transcription on desktop, 100 languages
  • Privacy: audio isn't stored after processing, history stays on your device, and nothing you say is used to train models
  • Pricing: 3,000 free words, no card required to start | Pro Monthly $14.99/mo | Pro Annual $79.99/year | Lifetime $249, with one plan for all four platforms (pricing). Students get 50% off, and anyone who finds typing hard gets 50% off (accessibility discount).
  • Missing compared with Monologue: voice notes, meeting notes, an Apple Watch app, written mode instructions and dictation without internet

Skip it if: Monologue's notes and meeting summaries are the reason you use it, or you need to dictate without a connection. Details in LumeVoice vs Monologue.

4. Aqua Voice#

Aqua Voice

Verdict: Lower-Cost Cloud Dictation on Four Platforms

Aqua Voice is cloud dictation for Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android (Aqua Voice pricing). Its Avalon model handles punctuation, grammar and filler words, Custom Instructions on Pro let you set your own rules, and Edit Mode changes text by voice on the desktop. Like Wispr Flow, it has no offline mode on Mac or Windows, per Aqua, and it lists 49 languages with Auto-Detect.

  • Pricing: Free (1,000 words) | Pro $10/month, or $8/month billed annually ($96/year) | Max $30/month, or $24/month billed annually | Business from $19 per seat a month. Students get 70% off.
  • Missing compared with Monologue: dictation without internet, and as many languages (49 against 100+)

Skip it if: you want a one-time license, or a refund if it doesn't work out: Aqua is subscription-only, and its terms say fees are non-refundable. More in LumeVoice vs Aqua Voice and Aqua Voice alternatives.

5. Spokenly#

Spokenly

Verdict: Free Local Models, Including on Windows and Linux

Spokenly gives you Whisper and Parakeet models that run on your own computer for free, with no word cap and no account needed, and works with your own API keys at no extra fee (Spokenly pricing). It runs on macOS, Windows, Linux and iPhone, and its modes take your own AI instructions, much as Monologue's do. Local+ ($29 once) adds extra recording styles and settings sync; Pro adds hosted cloud models and AI cleanup without your own keys.

  • Pricing: Free | Local+ $29 once | Pro $9.99/month or $99.99/year. Verified students get 50% off Pro.
  • Catch: cleanup is something you set up, through modes or an optional local cleanup that's off by default

Skip it if: you want polished text out of the box with no setup. More in LumeVoice vs Spokenly and Spokenly alternatives.

6. VoiceInk#

VoiceInk

Verdict: Pay Once for Local Dictation on a Mac

If Monologue's local mode was what you liked, VoiceInk does that for a one-time price. It's an open-source (GPLv3) Mac app that transcribes on your computer with models such as Parakeet and Whisper, and you can connect cloud providers with your own API keys (VoiceInk pricing). A companion iPhone and iPad app is free during its beta.

  • Requirements: an Apple silicon Mac with macOS 14.4 or later (its install guide says macOS 15)
  • Pricing: $25 once for one Mac, $39 for two or $49 for three, with a 7-day trial and a 14-day money-back guarantee; free if you build it from source
  • Catch: fuller cleanup needs AI enhancement with a provider you connect, an Ollama model, or its Refine model on a Mac with 16 GB of memory

Skip it if: you need Windows, Android or a meeting recorder. More in LumeVoice vs VoiceInk and VoiceInk alternatives.

7. Apple Dictation#

Apple Dictation

Verdict: Free and Already on Your Apple Devices

Since Monologue only runs on Apple hardware, the free fallback is already installed. Apple Dictation comes with macOS, iOS and iPadOS. On a Mac, Keyboard settings show which languages it processes on the device (Apple's Mac guide), and on iPhone Apple says dictation is processed on the phone in many languages, with no internet needed (iPhone guide).

  • Pros: free, nothing to install, fine for short messages
  • Cons: no custom vocabulary or AI cleanup, so you fix filler words and names yourself

Also worth a look#

Handy is a free, open-source (MIT) app that transcribes on your own computer on Mac, Windows and Linux, with no phone apps (Handy). See LumeVoice vs Handy and the best Handy alternatives.

When to stay with Monologue#

Some of Monologue's strengths are hard to replace:

  • Everything you own is Apple. Native apps for Mac, iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, with your dictionary, modes and notes in sync.
  • You use Voice Notes or meeting notes, perhaps feeding them to AI tools through MCP. Wispr Flow's Notetaker (Mac and Windows) and Superwhisper's meeting recording (macOS) cover meetings on a computer; Monologue also records notes from your iPhone and Apple Watch.
  • You dictate on an Apple silicon Mac with no connection, and like cloud cleanup when you're back online.
  • You already pay for Every. Pro is included, so switching only saves money if you'd cancel Every too.

Over three years, Monologue and Wispr Flow cost the most here, and four of the other apps can be bought outright.

How to switch from Monologue#

  1. Save the notes you need. Voice Notes are in Monologue's web app, and its Notes API and command-line tool can retrieve them (MCP and API).
  2. Copy your dictionary and modes. Note the terms you added, which apps trigger which mode, and any instructions you rely on.
  3. Try the new app on real work for a few days, using its free plan, allowance or trial.
  4. Cancel in the right place. App Store subscriptions are managed through Apple, direct purchases through Monologue's billing portal, and the Every bundle through your Every account. Past payments aren't refunded, so check your renewal date first.

Final verdict#

  • Closest match, on more devices and for less: Superwhisper
  • The direct cloud rival, with Windows and Android: Wispr Flow
  • Cleanup without setup, for less per year or once: LumeVoice
  • Lower-cost cloud dictation: Aqua Voice
  • Free local models, including on Windows and Linux: Spokenly
  • Pay once for local dictation on a Mac: VoiceInk
  • Free and built in: Apple Dictation

And if you live on Apple devices and use the notes, Monologue itself is still hard to replace.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a Monologue for Windows or Android?

No. As of October 2026, Monologue runs on Mac, iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, and its docs say it doesn't offer Windows or Android apps and haven't announced a date. Superwhisper, Wispr Flow, LumeVoice and Aqua Voice all run on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. Spokenly and Handy cover Windows and Linux but not Android, and Windows voice typing (Windows + H) is built in.

Is there a free alternative to Monologue?

Yes. Handy is free and open source on Mac, Windows and Linux, Spokenly's local models are free with no word cap, and Superwhisper's free plan gives unlimited dictation with local Whisper models. Apple Dictation is built into your Mac, iPhone and iPad, and Wispr Flow's free plan allows 2,000 words a week on desktop. Monologue itself only offers a free trial of 1,000 dictation words and 10 recorded notes.

Which Monologue alternatives work offline?

Superwhisper with local models, Spokenly's local models, VoiceInk on Apple silicon Macs and Handy all transcribe on your own computer without a connection. On iPhone, Apple's dictation works without internet in many languages. Wispr Flow, Aqua Voice and LumeVoice are cloud-based and always need a connection. Monologue itself transcribes without internet only on Apple silicon Macs, and its smart formatting still needs one.

What is the cheapest Monologue alternative?

Handy and Apple Dictation cost nothing, and Spokenly and Superwhisper have free plans with local models. Among paid options, as of October 2026, VoiceInk is $25 once for one Mac, Spokenly Local+ is $29 once, Superwhisper is $84.99 a year, Aqua Voice is $96 a year, and LumeVoice is $79.99/year or $249 once. Monologue Pro and Wispr Flow Pro both cost $144 a year.

Is LumeVoice a good Monologue alternative?

It is if you need Windows or Android, or want to pay less per year or pay once. LumeVoice runs on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, removes filler words and applies self-corrections by default, and costs $79.99/year or $249 once. But it has no voice notes, meeting notes or Apple Watch app, and it always needs an internet connection. If those matter, stay with Monologue or look at Superwhisper.
